Two Row on the Grand with Ellie Joseph & Jay Bailey

Two Row on the Grand is an annual nine day family-oriented camping and paddling excursion on The Grand River, starting in Cambridge and ending at Port Maitland, Lake Erie.

The concept is based on the four hundred year old two row wampum, which is explained in this presentation.

Truth and Reconciliation and Indigenous cultural teachings of The Haudenosaunee- People of the Longhouse who inhabit this area of Ontario- are just a few of the take-aways of this nature connection.

Ellie Joseph

I am of the Mohawk Nation, Turtle Clan, born, raised, and still live on the  Six Nations Reserve along the bank of The Grand River. I retired from a thirty-four year tenure as a classroom teacher of  Elementary School in our public school system a decade ago, but remain an active volunteer in the education field, and tutor privately in my own home.

After paddling on the sixteen day Two Row Renewal Campaign from Albany to Manhattan, New York, on The Hudson River in 2013, I was one of four participants who established what is now known as “Two Row on the Grand.” Functioning as a grassroots-volunteer committee, we have watched this project’s participation more than double in size in its three years of existence.  Plans are already underway for Two Row on the Grand 2019.

Jay Bailey

Having survived and thrived in over thirty years of teaching French, Jay has become an authentic voyageur, paddling over 4000 km on the fur trade routes of North America, equipped as in 1800. Since 1990, he has presented over 500 voyageur events in communities from Windsor to Vankleek Hill, Elliott Lake to Sault Ste. Marie and Winnipeg, bringing Canadian history and la joie de vivre canadienne to our students, currently online. He is also a published software designer/programmer and curriculum writer. In 2013, his Paddle Sister, Ellie, invited him to take part in the Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign Paddle from Albany to Manhattan. Profoundly affected by the journey, he, Ellie and two other participants felt it was important to bring the same teachings and paddle family experience to people along the Grand River. On a shoestring and volunteer enthusiasm, it took three years, but the Two Row on the Grand started in 2016 and continues annually to this day.
